For the past thirty-one years, the BMW M3 has taken the Ultimate Driving Machine philosophy laid down by the 3 Series and gave it wings. Today, the 2017 model is one of the most lauded performance luxury sports sedans out there. Packing M Performance gear galore, including a TwinPower Turbo inline-six with 425 horsepower, 406 lb-ft of twist, and nary a hint of turbo lag, its reputation on paper pales on comparison to what it’s like behind the wheel.

In spite of BMW’s axing of the 6 Series coupe, it will be replaced by an even higher-end model. That’s what the Concept 8 Series is previewing—a flagship two door that exemplifies a high-end sports car with the latest in the brand’s styling, technology, and powertrains. Set to be unveiled in production form next year, we’re told most of its eye-catching design will carry over.

The BMW 3 Series is more than just its sedan offering and trims. With a hybrid, diesel, hatchback, and wagon, there are a lot more ways to have this slice of Ultimate Driving Machine. Although its held the position as the go-to sports sedan for forty years, its unique breed of driving engagement and pleasure can be had in any of these forms!

While the BMW M2 offers the best of performance in the 2 Series lineup, its technically a niche model, and might be too powerful for those just getting used to the level of sportiness inherent in the Ultimate Driving Machine. If you’re one of those types, the M240i isn’t to be seen as a compromise—but rather, an introduction.

With worldwide sales giving our preferred automaker a solid start to the year, the attention its new models are garnering is an added bonus. Among these is the 2017 BMW 5 Series, which enters its seventh generation with an inside-and-out redesign, a laundry list of new features, and a driving experience that continues to raise the benchmark it has set—and maintained—for decades.
