Last year’s arrival of the seventh-gen 5 Series also heralded the coming of its sixth-gen M Performance counterpart, the 2018 BMW M5. But while this super sedan has always been wild, the Bavarian automaker has managed to tame it without excising its thoroughbred credentials. Case-in-point—it comes with all-wheel drive standard, but you can turn it off.
That’s right. When you start the M5, the M-Tuned xDrive system defaults to 4WD mode. You can either step down to a more RWD-biased setting with 4WD Sport, or go into RWD mode (which also deactivates traction control) and get the most out of the 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque the M5 has on tap. Yes, the 2018 model is more powerful, and hits sixty in 3.2 seconds from a dead stop. That’ll be plenty to leave three-pointed stars and four rings in the dust, but the nuances in between are also important. Fret not, BMW M has finetuned those, too!
Wild, playful, and tame when the situation calls for it will add up to a super sedan with plenty of fun in store. To learn more about it, or other M models, contact our BMW dealership in Salem, OR.
