Both vehicles offer standard safety features that include Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Brake Dry Assist, Cornering Brake Control, BMW Assist eCall and BMW TeleService. Other available safety features include Lane Departure Warning, Frontal Collision Warning including Pedestrian Warning and City Collision Mitigation.

To receive a 2017 Top Safety Pick+ rating, vehicles have to receive a "good" rating in all five IIHS crashworthiness tests -- small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint – as well as an "advanced" or "superior" rating for front crash prevention and – new for 2017 -- an "acceptable" or "good" headlight rating.
